As Sacramento held its inaugural Native American parade Saturday morning, organized by the California Legislative Native American Caucus, the day was filled with joy. To celebrate being Native. The day was a reminder that, what was once a place where Native culture and practices were outlawed, has now welcomed it.

It’s California’s Inaugural Native American Heritage Month and part of that celebration was a parade Saturday through the Capitol Mall in downtown Sacramento. Regina Cuellar, Chairwoman of the Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians said,

Sacramento State has announced the launch of a Native American College, the first in the California State University system.

The Native American College will welcome its first cohort in Fall 2025 and integrate tribal values, traditions and community engagement to support students.

Sacramento State announced it has formed a Native American College, which is the first of its kind in the California State University system. The university said the college will have its first cohort for the fall 2025 semester and feature a curriculum that fosters “deep connections to tribal government and community-based learning.
