The National Hurricane Center is continues to monitor a system in the Atlantic with low odds of developing into the seasons next tropical depression or storm and weakening Tropical Storm Rafael.

Hurricane Rafael was downgraded to a tropical storm as it continued westward in the Gulf of Mexico posing no threat to land for now while the National Hurricane Center kept track of another system with low odds to develop into the next tropical depression or storm.

The National Hurricane Center said Rafael is now a post-tropical remnant, and that it is currently tracking a system in the Caribbean Sea.

As per the National Hurricane Center’s 3 pm Saturday update, Tropical Storm Rafael is 315 miles north-northwest of Progreso Mexico, with maximum sustained wind of 50 mph. It’s moving at 5 mph to the west-northwest.

Rafael weakened on Saturday and is expected to remain a tropical storm in the central Gulf of Mexico from Sunday into Monday, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) announced. On Saturday morning, the agency said the storm was about 290 miles of Progreso, Mexico. Rafael is moving northwest at six mph, the NHC said.

Rafael has weakened to a tropical storm and was expected to dissolve over the Gulf of Mexico in the coming days after barreling across Cuba as a Category 3 hurricane.

Hurricane trackers reveal that another storm is brewing in the Atlantic that could become Tropical Storm Sara as it enters the Gulf of Mexico. This comes as storm Rafael fizzled out over the weekend.
