In the immediate aftermath of the New Year’s truck attack that killed 14 people and injured dozens in New Orleans, President-elect Donald Trump baselessly—and, it turns out, falsely— suggested that the Biden administration’s immigration policies were to blame.

Though a U.S. citizen killed revelers on Bourbon Street, experts say the incoming president sees advantages in blaming immigrants and Islam for New Year's Day attack.

He said the Bourbon Street attack was part of "a significant increase in what we term homegrown violent extremism."
