WEBJul 21, 2017 · On August 1st, 1876, President Grant signed a proclamation admitting Colorado to the Union as the 38th state. It became known as the Centennial State, as a result of becoming an official state 28 days after the Centennial of the US.

Flag manufacturers mistakenly believed that the two Dakotas would be admitted instead as one state and so manufactured this flag, some of which still exist. It was never an official flag.
